Chapter 4

The harsh fluorescent lights of the corporate office felt blinding on Monday morning. Eleanor took a deep breath, smoothing down the lapels of her charcoal blazer as she stepped off the elevator and walked down the long, carpeted corridor toward her cubicle. The weekend had flown by in a blur of quiet reflections and lingering text messages exchanged with Julian, but reality was waiting for her in the form of deadlines, spreadsheets, and, most importantly, Chloe.

As Eleanor approached her desk, she noticed a small group gathered near the breakroom door, whispering and glancing sideways in her direction. Chloe stood at the center of the huddle, holding a paper cup of coffee and wearing a tightly wound, condescending smile. When Chloe saw Eleanor walking down the hall with her head held high and a calm, focused expression, the smile faltered slightly.

"Well, look who survived the weekend," Chloe said loudly enough for half the floor to hear, stepping forward to block Eleanor's path. "We were all wondering how your big date went on Friday. Did the mystery man propose dessert, or did you end up eating alone in the parking lot?"

The silence in the corridor was palpable. Several coworkers pretended to be intensely focused on their computer monitors while straining their ears to catch every word. Eleanor stopped, maintaining complete composure. She looked directly into Chloe’s eyes, refusing to show a single flicker of insecurity or anger.

"The date went exceptionally well, thank you for asking, Chloe," Eleanor replied smoothly, her voice calm and even. "As it turns out, Julian is a remarkable man. We had a wonderful dinner, lovely conversation, and a fantastic time."

Chloe’s eyes narrowed in disbelief. "Julian? Wait... Julian Vance? From the executive board?" A flicker of genuine panic crossed Chloe's face as the reality of who she had inadvertently set Eleanor up with finally began to sink in.

"The very same," Eleanor said, offering a serene, polite smile. "He sends his regards, by the way. He mentioned how amusing he found your little prank."

Before Chloe could fumble for a response, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. Julian appeared around the corner, wearing a tailored navy suit that commanded immediate attention. He was holding a sleek leather folio and walking with a purposeful stride that instantly brought total silence to the office floor. He stopped directly beside Eleanor, offering her a warm, professional nod before turning his gaze toward the pale, trembling figure of Chloe.

"Good morning, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet open-plan office. Then, turning to Chloe with an expression of icy politeness, he added, "And good morning to you. I believe we have a human resources compliance meeting scheduled in ten minutes, Chloe. Shall we?"
