Chapter 8

The confession hung in the warm air between them, casting a humanizing light over Julian’s polished, formidable exterior. Eleanor listened with rapt attention, recognizing the profound vulnerability it took for a man of his stature to admit to past heartbreak. She squeezed his hand gently across the table, offering silent solidarity.

"Thank you for telling me that," Eleanor said softly. "It explains a lot about why you saw right through Chloe's little game. You have an instinct for recognizing when people are wearing masks."

"Exactly," Julian agreed, a faint sigh of relief escaping his lips. "And when I saw you sitting there, wearing a mask of forced composure while your heart was breaking, I didn't see someone playing a game. I saw someone authentic. Someone who felt pain deeply and honestly. That was the moment everything changed for me."

As the main course was served—pan-seared duck breast with a cherry reduction—the conversation shifted toward lighter topics, allowing the heavy emotional gravity of their previous discussion to settle into a comfortable warmth. Yet, as fate would have it, the city they lived in was small, and elite circles often intersected in unexpected ways.

Near the end of the meal, as Julian was requesting the dessert menu, a tall, elegantly dressed woman with dark, styled hair and sharp features paused by their table. Eleanor looked up, instantly recognizing the sophisticated silhouette. It was Victoria Vance, Julian’s former fiancée, accompanied by a prominent venture capitalist whose company frequently bid on contracts with Julian’s firm.

"Julian," Victoria said, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness as she forced a tight, brittle smile. "I didn't realize you frequented this corner of the restaurant anymore. And... dining with company, I see. How progressive."

Julian did not stand up. He simply turned his head slowly toward her, his expression turning into an impenetrable mask of cool indifference. "Good evening, Victoria. I assure you, some things are worth revisiting."

Victoria’s eyes flicked toward Eleanor, taking in her emerald dress and the relaxed, intimate posture they shared. A flash of irritation crossed Victoria's features before she plastered her society smile back on. "Well, I won't interrupt your... whatever this is. Enjoy your evening."

As Victoria walked away toward her own table, Eleanor looked at Julian, noticing the slight tension in his jawline. "That was entirely unexpected," Eleanor murmured.

"She travels in circles that refuse to accept that life moves on," Julian said dismissively, though his eyes remained dark. "Ignore her, Eleanor. She has no bearing on us."

"Does she still pose a threat to your firm?" Eleanor asked, knowing the complicated politics of their industry.

"Not professionally, and certainly not personally," Julian replied firmly, reaching back across the table to take her hand once more. "Let's not let ghosts ruin a perfect evening."
