Chapter 9: The Dawn Departure

The pale grey light of dawn filtered through the sheer curtains of the guest suite, casting long shadows across the packed duffel bags sitting by the door. Connor zipped his brown jacket, double-checking the inner pocket where the hidden declaration and the brass key safely rested. Clara sat on the edge of the bed, gently adjusting the straps of the baby carrier to ensure her daughter was secure and comfortable for the hasty departure.

"We need to go straight to the bank before heading to the courthouse," Connor whispered, lifting the heavier duffel bag with one hand while keeping the other free.

"Do you really think the key will open the safety deposit box?" Clara asked, her voice laced with cautious hope as she stood up and checked her own travel bag.

"My father gave it to me the summer before he fell ill," Connor replied, offering a reassuring smile. "He told me that if anything ever happened to him, the truth would be waiting where the old world meets the new."

The multi-tiered cake from the celebration the night before sat abandoned on the dining table, its white icing already beginning to dry out under the morning sun. They slipped through the side kitchen door, stepping out onto the gravel driveway just as the cool morning breeze hit their faces.

Connor opened the passenger door of their sedan, helping Clara settle inside with the baby before rushing around to the driver's seat. He turned the ignition, and the engine hummed to life.
