Chapter 14: The Final Confrontation

The two uniformed deputies stepped forward, blocking Connor’s path to the clerk's desk. Helen didn't flinch; she simply waved the certified paper in the air, signaling the officers to intervene.

"Step back, sir," the lead deputy instructed, placing a hand on his holster. "We have a lawful eviction order signed by Judge Miller. Any interference will result in immediate arrest."

Clara stepped forward, her voice ringing clear and strong through the corridor. "Look at the notary stamp on that order, Officer. It was processed by an attorney currently under active investigation for wire fraud and estate forgery."

Before the deputy could respond, the elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed open. Two men in dark suits stepped out, badges gleaming on their lapels, accompanied by a local precinct lieutenant. The lead investigator held out a folded blue folder containing an official document titled "NOTICE OF HOUSE DEED" alongside federal arrest warrants.

"Helen Sterling and Marcus Vance," the federal investigator announced, his voice cutting through the tense silence of the hallway. "You are both under arrest for interstate financial fraud, forgery, and systematic elder abuse."

Helen’s face drained of all color. The certified eviction order slipped from her trembling fingers, fluttering uselessly to the marble floor.

Connor stepped past the stunned deputies, pulled the original declaration of survivorship and the forensic audit from his jacket, and handed them directly to the federal investigator.

"This house," Connor said, looking directly at his mother as the handcuffs clicked into place around her wrists, "was never yours."
