Chapter 1: The Broken Rules of the Dining Room

The chandelier above the modern dining table cast a brilliant, clinical light across the icing of the white multi-tiered cake. Helen sat at the head of the table, her silver hair styled in a tight bun, swirling a deep red Merlot in her crystal glass. Around her, extended family members murmured polite laughter, raising their glasses in a toast to a legacy built on decades of control. But the celebratory atmosphere shattered the moment Martha’s voice cut through the ambient noise like broken glass.
"In this house, I make the rules," Helen declared, her tone biting and absolute, directing her cold glare toward the kitchen counter where Clara stood trembling, her baby strapped tightly into a front-facing cotton carrier.
Clara swallowed hard, the weight of the infant against her chest a grounding anchor in the suffocating room. She looked down at the stack of ceramic plates she was organizing, her fingers brushing against the cold porcelain.
Connor stepped through the swinging doorway at that exact moment, carrying a wrapped gift box in one hand and a small plate holding a single slice of cake in the other. He adjusted the straps of his baby carrier, his dark hair slightly ruffled from the evening commute.
Clara looked up, her eyes wide with unshed tears, and whispered, "Connor… she said I couldn't stop yet."
Helen didn’t blink. She set her wine glass down with a sharp clink against the mahogany wood. "Your hands are far too soft for a woman carrying the future of this family, Clara. You haven't earned your place at this table, and neither has that child."
Connor froze mid-stride. He looked at Clara’s pale face, then shifted his gaze to Helen. The ambient chatter of the family died down instantly. The silence in the bright room became deafening, broken only by the soft, steady breathing of the two infants sleeping against their parents' chests. Connor set the gift and the plate down on the kitchen island with deliberate slowness. His jaw tightened as he stepped closer to Clara, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulder.

"She has worked harder than anyone in this room," Connor said, his voice dangerously low.
"You know nothing about what it took to keep this estate standing," Helen snapped back, standing up from her chair. "And tomorrow morning, you’ll find out just how little you actually own."
