Chapter 6: The Hidden Compartment

The harsh desk lamp illuminated the jagged tears where the final pages of the ledger had once been bound. Clara leaned over Connor's shoulder, her eyes tracing the rough paper edges while the baby slept peacefully in the front carrier.
"She ripped them out on purpose," Clara whispered, her voice tight with frustration. "All of your father's notes regarding the secondary trust are gone."
Connor didn't answer. His fingers traced the inner spine of the leather-bound book, feeling an unusual thickness in the back cover. He pressed his thumb against the aged leather, feeling a faint click beneath the cardboard backing. With a gentle pry using the edge of a pocketknife, a hidden compartment popped open, revealing a folded slip of heavy cream-colored paper and a small brass key.
"What is that?" Clara asked, holding her breath.
Connor unfolded the heavy paper carefully, his eyes widening as he read the embossed letterhead. It wasn't a page from the ledger; it was an original, unfiled declaration of survivorship, signed by his father and witnessed by two independent parties whose names Connor didn't recognize. At the bottom was a specific instruction pointing directly to the safety deposit box at the downtown branch of the First National Bank.

"She missed this," Connor breathed, a rare smile breaking through his exhausted expression. "She thought destroying the ledger was enough."
Before they could celebrate, the heavy oak front door downstairs slammed shut with a concussive boom that shook the floorboards beneath their feet. Heavy footsteps began ascending the grand staircase, moving with an urgent, purposeful stride.
