Chapter 12: The Ambush in the Garage

The tinted window of the black town car rolled down slowly, revealing Marcus’s strained, aggressive expression. He didn't bother stepping out of the vehicle; instead, he rested his arm on the open window frame, staring directly at Connor and Clara with cold calculation.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Connor," Marcus said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the underground parking garage. "Helen has already initiated the emergency eviction proceedings. The sheriff is currently at the property executing the order."

"Let us pass, Marcus," Connor said, his voice steady as he positioned himself protectively in front of Clara and the baby. "We have the original forensic audit and the unfiled trust documents. Your fraudulent filings are already on their way to the district attorney's desk."

Marcus’s polite facade finally cracked completely. A flash of genuine panic crossed his features, replaced instantly by dark menace. "You think a flash drive and some old paper will save you? Helen owns half the judges in this county. By the time you reach the courthouse, those documents will be declared inadmissible hearsay."

"Try telling that to the federal investigators who specialize in elder financial abuse," Clara retorted sharply, pulling out her phone and holding it up as if recording the entire exchange.

Marcus cursed under his breath, threw the town car into reverse with a squeal of tires, and sped backward out of the garage, abandoning the blockade just as quickly as he had appeared. Connor didn't hesitate; he unlocked the sedan, ushered Clara inside, and slammed his foot on the gas pedal, racing toward the county courthouse.
