Chapter 10: The Bank Vault

The First National Bank downtown was quiet, a stark contrast to the chaotic tension of the estate they had just fled. Connor parked the sedan in the underground garage, keeping a watchful eye on the security cameras overhead. They walked through the glass revolving doors into the cool, marble-tiled lobby just as the teller windows opened for the morning shift.
Connor approached the front desk, placing the small brass key and his identification card on the polished counter. The middle-aged clerk examined the key, typed a series of codes into her terminal, and nodded politely.
"Mr. Sterling. Please follow me to the private vault downstairs," the clerk said, leading them through a heavy steel security door into a quiet chamber lined with rows of safety deposit boxes.
She guided them to a private viewing booth, inserted a master key alongside Connor’s small brass key, and pulled a heavy metal box from the wall before leaving them alone behind the frosted glass door.
Connor set the metal box down on the wooden table, his hands trembling slightly as he unlatched the lid. Inside rested a thick stack of legal documents tied with a red ribbon, a flash drive, and a handwritten letter addressed directly to him.

Clara leaned in close, holding the sleeping infant steady as Connor untied the ribbon and unfolded the topmost document. It wasn't just a deed; it was a comprehensive forensic audit proving Helen had systematically embezzled funds from the family trust over the course of a decade.
"She didn't just steal the house," Clara whispered, her eyes wide as she scanned the financial breakdown. "She systematically bankrupted the entire family."
