Chapter 4: The Midnight Footsteps

The slow, deliberate turning of the brass doorknob made the hair on the back of Connor's neck stand on end. Clara stepped back into the shadows of the walk-in closet, holding her breath while pressing the sleeping infant firmly against her chest to muffle any sound. Connor positioned himself squarely in front of the closet door, his fists clenched at his sides, his eyes locked on the heavy wood as it inched inward. The hallway light spilled across the Persian rug, casting a long, distorted shadow into the room.

Helen stepped across the threshold, her silk robe rustling softly with every movement. She wasn't carrying a candle or a phone; she held a single, aged leather-bound journal that Connor immediately recognized as his late father’s personal ledger. A slow, chilling smile played on her lips as she closed the door behind her with a soft click, locking them inside the suffocating space.

"You were always far too curious for your own good, Connor," Helen said smoothly, her voice lacking any warmth or maternal affection. "Just like your father. He thought sentimentality could override the cold reality of property law."

"Put the journal down, Helen," Connor said, stepping forward. "You have no right to be in here."

"This entire estate belongs to me, every brick, every acre, every memory," Helen replied, stepping closer without an ounce of fear. She tapped the leather cover of the ledger against her palm. "You think a few sentimental promises made on a deathbed hold any weight in a court of law? Marcus filed the transfer papers three days ago. By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, the sheriff will be here to escort you both off the property."

Clara emerged silently from the shadow of the closet, her voice cutting through the tense air with unexpected steel. "We’re not leaving."
