Chapter 2: The Weight of the Carrier

Connor felt the soft, rhythmic breathing of his infant daughter pressed against his chest, a stark contrast to the tightening knot of dread in his stomach. He gently unbuckled the padded straps of the baby carrier, sliding the harness off his shoulders with practiced care. He lifted the sleeping infant into his arms, resting her head against his collarbone, and walked over to a quiet corner of the sunlit kitchen away from Helen’s penetrating stare. Clara remained frozen by the counter, her fingers still resting on the stack of plates as if letting go would cause her entire world to collapse.

"Don't let her break you," Connor whispered softly, pressing a kiss to the top of his daughter's head while keeping his eyes fixed on his mother across the room.

Helen resumed her seat, smoothing the fabric of her tailored skirt as if nothing had happened. The other family members quickly averted their eyes, pretending to study their dessert plates or whispering among themselves in hushed tones. The illusion of a happy family gathering had completely evaporated, replaced by a tense, suffocating power dynamic that had clearly governed this household for decades. Connor handed the baby to Clara, whose trembling hands managed to secure the infant safely back into her own carrier. The shared touch between Connor and Clara was brief, but it communicated a silent pact: they could no longer endure this psychological prison.

"We need to leave tonight," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator.

"Not yet," Connor replied, his eyes narrowing as he watched Helen hand a thick manila folder to her attorney, Marcus, who sat quietly at the far end of the table. "We need proof. My father left instructions before he passed away, and Helen has spent three years hiding the truth of his final will."

Marcus slid the folder across the polished table, and Helen tapped it with a manicured fingernail, offering Connor a cruel, knowing smile that promised total ruin by sunrise.
