In mid-summer, the peace of the cottage was briefly threatened by a final, desperate gasp from the past.
A luxury black town car navigated the narrow gravel road, stopping outside the split-rail fence.
Tristan stepped out.
He wore a tailored linen suit that looked slightly frayed at the cuffs, his hair styled too carefully, his face tight with forced charm. Behind him walked a sharp-featured family lawyer carrying a leather briefcase.
Clara was in the garden, tying tomato vines to wooden stakes, while Evelyn played on a blanket on the lawn under Hannah’s watchful eye.
Tristan walked up to the gate, flashing a practiced, charming smile.
""Clara, darling,"" Tristan began, his voice dripping with performative affection. ""It took my team three months to locate you. You've had your little rustic adventure. Now let's talk like civilized adults. I have brought a formal joint-custody settlement that will allow us to co-parent Evelyn properly in Boston.""
Clara did not drop her garden shears. She stood up, wiped her hands on her canvas apron, and walked calmly to the gate.
""You have no parental rights to this child, Tristan,"" Clara said evenly.
The lawyer stepped forward. ""Mrs. Vance, under Massachusetts common-law precedence—""

""This is Maine, counselor,"" a deep, quiet voice interrupted from the driveway.
