Chapter 4: The Sheriff on Bellevue

At 9:15 AM in Newport, Tristan was sitting in the grand dining room of the mansion, wearing a silk robe, sipping espresso while reviewing a mock-up of a yacht brochure he intended to purchase with Clara’s trust dividends.

The front doorbell did not ring.

The heavy oak doors were pushed open by Sheriff Donald Bradley, accompanied by two armed deputies and three representatives from the Rhode Island Coastal Conservancy.

Tristan jumped up from the table, spilling espresso onto the white linen cloth. ""What is the meaning of this? You are trespassing on private property!""

Sheriff Bradley, a man with thirty years on the force and zero tolerance for Newport arrogance, stepped forward, holding a certified red-sealed writ of possession.

""Mr. Tristan Vance?"" Bradley asked calmly.

""Yes! And I want you out of my house immediately!""

""This is not your house, Mr. Vance,"" Bradley said, handing him the writ. ""As of midnight, this property was purchased by the Coastal Conservancy. The deed is recorded with the county clerk. You have fifty-two minutes remaining to pack two suitcases and surrender all keys. After ten o'clock, anyone remaining on the premises will be arrested for criminal trespass on state-protected parkland.""

Tristan stared at the document, his eyes scanning the certified signatures, the seal of the Federal Reserve wire transfer, and the bold signature at the bottom: *Clara Castile, Sole Trustee.*

""No..."" Tristan choked out, his hands shaking so violently that the paper rattled. ""She can't do this! We are married!""

""The marriage was never legally registered in Rhode Island, Mr. Vance,"" the conservancy’s attorney added smoothly from behind the sheriff. ""Your wedding ceremony in the Bahamas was symbolic, and the legal license was never filed because you refused to submit your financial disclosures. You are an unauthorized occupant. Start packing.""
