Chapter 12: The Launching of the Skiff

On Evelyn’s second birthday, the harbor in Cape Elizabeth was bathed in radiant autumn sunshine.

At David’s boatyard, a small crowd of fifty local fishermen, neighbors, and foundation families gathered around the wooden slipway.

Resting on the timber rollers was a beautifully restored fourteen-foot cedar skiff, its white hull gleaming, its oak gunwales polished to a rich, honey gold.

Painted across the transom in neat, dark blue lettering was the name:

*THE LADY EVELYN*

David stood by the bow, holding a bottle of sparkling apple cider. He looked over at Clara, who stood holding two-year-old Evelyn on her hip, both of them wearing warm knitted sweaters.

""This boat was built sixty years ago by an honest fisherman who used it to feed his family,"" David spoke to the crowd, his voice warm and clear over the sound of the gulls. ""It was broken, left to rot in the mud for twenty years. But when you give good wood the care it deserves, it remembers how to float.""

He handed the bottle to Clara.

Clara smiled, gently tapping the cider against the bronze stem band. ""May you carry safe journeys, guard the honest, and always find your way home.""

The crowd cheered as the skiff slid smoothly down the greased timber ways into the cold, clear water of the cove, floating high, proud, and perfectly balanced against the gentle swell.
