Chapter 10: The Sovereign Ground

David walked up the path, wearing his work boots and denim shirt, holding a heavy timber framing mallet in one hand.

Beside him walked Deputy Sheriff Miller—his elder brother—carrying a registered judicial folder.

""Tristan Vance?"" Deputy Miller asked, stepping between Tristan and the gate.

Tristan scoffed, his face flushing red. ""This is a private domestic matter between a husband and wife! Get these local yokels off this property, Clara!""

""Mr. Vance,"" Deputy Miller said, opening the folder. ""You are currently subject to an active federal warrant issued by the District Court of Rhode Island for wire fraud, corporate tax evasion, and failure to appear at your scheduled bankruptcy depositions.""

Tristan froze, his charming smile shattering into sheer terror.

""Furthermore,"" the deputy continued, ""Mrs. Castile filed a permanent protection from abuse order three months ago, supported by the timestamped security footage of you locking an infant out in a freezing storm on Bellevue Avenue. You are within five hundred feet of the protected party.""

The deputy turned Tristan around, clicked steel handcuffs over his wrists, and read him his rights in a calm, steady cadence.

Tristan looked back at Clara, his face contorted in desperate, sniveling rage. ""Clara! Tell them to stop! You’re destroying my life!""

Clara looked at him across the wooden gate—not with anger, not with hatred, but with the pure, untroubled clarity of a woman who had completely severed the chain.

""You destroyed your own life, Tristan,"" Clara said softly. ""The storm is over.""

The deputy escorted Tristan into the cruiser and drove away, leaving the lane quiet once more.
