Chapter 2: The Severed Line

The SUV pulled out through the wrought-iron gates into the coastal highway, the tires hissing against the flooded asphalt.

Inside the cabin, the heater blew warm, cedar-scented air. Marcus handed a dry flannel blanket back to Clara, his dark eyes meeting hers in the rearview mirror with quiet, solemn reverence.

""The wire transfer cleared the Federal Reserve escrow six minutes ago, Clara,"" Marcus said. ""The funds are dispersed directly into the three designated non-profit accounts. Ten million to the Providence Children's Hospital pediatric surgical wing, ten million to the regional coastal land preservation fund, and four million five hundred thousand into a blind educational trust for Evelyn.""

Clara wrapped the dry blanket around her daughter, pressing her lips against the baby’s warm forehead.

""And Tristan's equity claims?"" Clara asked softly.

""His name was only on the decorative occupancy permit,"" Marcus replied with a faint, tight smile. ""By tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, the county sheriff will serve the eviction notice. When she discovered his financial embezzlement from the family charity last month, he had laughed in her face, threatening to take custody of their unborn child if she dared to speak to an attorney.

Tonight, when she had confronted him after returning from the hospital, he had pushed her out into the storm, changing the digital lock code to show her who was 'master.'
