THE COLD RAIN AT DAWN / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Fire on the Hearth

That evening, a gentle autumn rain began to tap against the leaded windows of the cedar cottage.

Inside, the living room was alive with warmth. The stone fireplace crackled softly, throwing dancing shadows across the pine floorboards.

Little Evelyn was curled up on a sheepskin rug before the hearth, fast asleep with her favorite plush harbor seal tucked under her arm.

Clara and David sat at the wide wooden kitchen table, drinking hot peppermint tea and reviewing hand-drawn blueprints for an expanded organic greenhouse at the children's center.

David set his pencil down, looked across the table at Clara, and reached out his rough, calloused hand, resting his palm upward on the wood.

Clara looked at his hand—a hand that had never struck a blow, never signed a lie, and spent every day building shelter for others.

She placed her hand in his, their fingers interlocking naturally, warm and secure.

""You built a good life here, Clara,"" David said softly, his blue eyes filled with quiet, unreserved devotion.

""We built it, David,"" Clara whispered, a radiant, peaceful smile touching her lips. ""Together.""

David reached into his pocket and placed a small, polished wooden box on the table between them.

Inside was a simple band hand-carved from white oak salvaged from the seawall, inlaid with a single, unrefined river pearl found in the cove.

""If you'll have me, Clara,"" David said, his voice deep and steady, ""I promise to stand between you and every storm for the rest of my days.""

Clara’s eyes filled with tears of pure, unburdened joy. ""Yes, David. Always.""
