THE COLD RAIN AT DAWN / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Collapse of the Façade

Within twenty-four hours, the story broke across national business and society headlines:

*“NEWPORT HEIRESS SELLS $24M MANSION OUT FROM UNDER SOCIALITE PARTNER, DONATES PROCEEDS TO PEDIATRIC CANCER AND LAND CONSERVATION.”*

The fallout for Tristan was instantaneous, total, and unsparing.

His private equity partners, who had tolerated his arrogance only because of his supposed access to the Castile multi-million-dollar endowment, severed all ties within forty-eight hours. His country club memberships were revoked due to delinquent dues; his leased sports cars were repossessed, and the luxury boutique hotel on Ocean Drive that he had claimed to co-own was revealed to be in deep default.

Tristan retreated to a small, rented apartment in Boston, barricading himself behind closed blinds as journalists and process servers camped outside his door.

He tried to call Clara eighty times a day, but every number he dialed connected to the automated recording of the probate court’s legal mediation office:

*""All communications with the Castile Trust must be submitted in writing through certified postal mail to the Clerk of the Southern District.""*

Sitting alone in his dark apartment, surrounded by cardboard boxes of clothes he had hastily thrown together in Newport, Tristan realized with cold, terrifying finality that the woman he had locked out in the rain had erased his existence with the stroke of a pen.
