Chapter 14: The Public Garden

Five years later.

The grand estate on Bellevue Avenue in Newport had been completely transformed.

The high, intimidating iron gates had been permanently removed. In their place stood an open stone archway welcoming thousands of visitors every summer to the *Castile Public Marine Sanctuary & Healing Gardens*.

Where luxury limousines had once idled on the circular drive, children from regional oncology centers now laughed and played among therapeutic lavender beds, sensory fountains, and shaded timber pavilions.

The mansion’s grand ballroom was now an open-access maritime educational library, where public school students learned ocean conservation, marine biology, and sustainable coastal agriculture.

On a warm Saturday in June, Clara, David, and seven-year-old Evelyn walked through the blooming rose gardens overlooking the ocean.

Evelyn ran ahead, her blonde curls bouncing in the summer breeze, carrying a wooden toy sailboat David had carved for her.

She stopped at a bronze plaque mounted on a low fieldstone wall near the entrance:

*“No life is truly wealthy that closes its doors to the storm.*

*Dedicated to the children who find shelter in the light.”*

Evelyn turned back, waving excitedly. ""Mommy! Daddy! Look at the butterflies on the roses!""

Clara caught up, kneeling beside her daughter and wrapping her arm around her small shoulders.

""They love the sweet flowers, sweetheart,"" Clara smiled, kissing her daughter’s cheek.

David stood beside them, his strong hand resting gently on Clara’s back, watching the blue waves crash peacefully against the cliffs below.
