Chapter 9

The entire hallway went dead silent save for Lily’s ragged breathing. The little girl clung to Ari’s neck, her small body trembling so violently that the manila folder in Ari’s hand rattled. She wasn't crying with the temperamental frustration of a tired child anymore; this was the primal, frozen terror of someone who had seen something unnatural in the shadows.

"Lily, sweetie, what is it? What do you see?" Ari asked, his voice softening as he turned his body to shield her, his own heart hammering against his ribs.

Lily didn't answer with words. She simply buried her face deeper into Ari’s shoulder, pointing a shaking finger directly at the swinging door that led from the hallway into the kitchen. The kitchen was supposed to be empty; the police had swept the perimeter upon arrival, and Clara had been locked outside on the porch just moments ago. Yet, a faint, rhythmic sound was emanating from behind that swinging door—a slow, scratching noise, like fingernails dragging across old linoleum.

Officer Davis and Officer Miller immediately reacted, their training kicking in with mechanical precision. Davis unholstered his firearm, keeping the barrel pointed safely toward the floor as he edged past Ari. Miller drew his own weapon, falling into a tactical two-step behind his partner, their heavy boots making no sound on the polished floor.

"Police! Stay where you are!" Officer Davis shouted, his voice echoing sharply down the narrow corridor. He reached out with his left hand, shoving the swinging kitchen door wide open with a swift, decisive motion.

The harsh fluorescent light of the kitchen illuminated the room. It was completely empty. The counters were spotless, the refrigerator hummed quietly in the corner, and the custody papers Clara had mentioned earlier still lay neatly stacked on the kitchen island. There was no intruder, no hidden person, and no obvious source for the scratching sound.

Margaret let out a sharp, theatrical breath, rolling her eyes toward the ceiling. "See? I told you! This house is plagued by mass hysteria brought on by that woman's paranoia! The child is terrified because her mother has spent weeks whispering ghost stories into her ear to turn them against me!"

Clara, who had managed to slip past the open front door and step into the back of the hallway, shot Margaret a venomous look. "I have never spoken to Lily about anything other than keeping safe! You are gaslighting this entire family, just like you've done for thirty years!"

"Mrs. Vance, I told you to stay outside," Officer Davis snapped, lowering his weapon slightly as he stepped back out of the kitchen, his brow furrowed with deep suspicion. He looked at Clara, then at Ari, then back at the empty kitchen. "This situation is completely out of hand. We have conflicting assault claims, a disputed property trust, and now phantom noises in an empty room. I am calling for backup and code enforcement to seal this property until a magistrate can sort out the custody and property injunctions."

Ari stood frozen, the manila folder slipping from his numb fingers and scattering its yellowed pages across the hardwood floor. As the papers fluttered down, one particular document caught his eye—a handwritten medical addendum clipped to the back of the trust agreement, bearing his father’s shaky signature and a date that changed everything.
