Chapter 12

Officer Davis stopped halfway down the basement stairs, his boots coming to a halt as he stared at the digital keypad glowing faintly in the dark. It emitted a soft, rhythmic green pulse, powered by an independent battery backup unit wired directly into the estate’s main electrical grid. This wasn't a relic of the nineteen-eighties; it was a modern, high-security installation tucked away in the deepest corner of a supposedly abandoned cellar.
"Mr. Vance!" Davis called up the stairwell, his voice echoing sharply. "Get down here, and bring your wife. You need to see this."
Ari hesitated for a split second, looking down at little Lily, who whimpered and shook her head against his chest, whispering, "Don't go down there, Daddy. It's dark."
"Stay here by the door, Clara," Ari said, handing Lily gently to his wife. Clara took the little girl in her arms, pressing her close, but she stepped right behind Ari as he descended the wooden stairs, refusing to be left in the dark again. Officer Miller stayed upstairs with Margaret, who was glaring daggers at the back of their heads as they disappeared down the cellar steps.
Ari and Clara reached the bottom landing, stepping carefully around the splintered remnants of the old filing cabinet. Officer Davis pointed his flashlight directly at the reinforced steel door set into the rear concrete wall. Unlike the walk-in safe upstairs, this door was sleek, modern, and bore no handle—only a heavy motorized locking mechanism controlled entirely by the digital keypad and biometric scanner glowing on the right-hand frame.
"Did you know about this, Ari?" Davis asked, shining the light across the smooth metal surface.
"No," Ari breathed, stepping closer and running a trembling hand over the cool steel. "My father never mentioned a second vault. When he passed away, all the blueprints of the house handed down to me only showed the upper security safe. Why would my mother need a second, high-tech vault hidden behind the storage room?"
Clara stepped up beside him, her green eyes scanning the surrounding shelves. Stacked neatly on a nearby workbench were several modern electronic devices—tablets, external hard drives, and financial ledgers bearing recent dates. "She wasn't just hiding old records, Ari. She was running something out of here. Look at the data feeds running up into the house."
Before Davis could reach out to inspect the keypad, the digital display suddenly flickered, shifting from a steady green pulse to a harsh, flashing red warning light. A sharp, mechanical beep filled the basement, followed by the deep, heavy thud of internal locking bolts sliding securely into place behind the steel frame.

"Stand back!" Davis commanded, drawing his firearm as the vault’s internal ventilation system hissed to life, pumping a low stream of filtered air through a vent above the door.
Ari grabbed Clara’s hand, pulling her backward as the steel door slowly began to click and shift on its heavy hydraulic hinges, responding to a remote override command triggered from upstairs.
