Chapter 3

The massive vault door swung open with a heavy groan, and Margaret stepped across the threshold like a specter emerging from a tomb. Her grey hair, usually neat in a bun, was wild around her flushed face, and the beige cardigan over her brown shirt was twisted askew. Her eyes darted wildly around the hallway before locking onto Officer Davis and Officer Miller with ferocious intensity. Without a moment’s hesitation, she thrust a trembling finger toward Clara, her voice cracking with theatrical outrage.

"She attacked me!" Margaret shrieked, her voice echoing off the hardwood walls. "That woman assaulted her own mother-in-law, threw me to the floor, and locked me in the dark! Look at me, officers! She’s unstable! She wants to take my home, my family, everything I’ve built!"

Clara stared in disbelief at the sudden theatrical shift in Margaret’s demeanor. Just moments ago, the older woman had been cursing and thrashing in the dark; now, she played the helpless, abused victim with chilling precision. Lily whimpered, burying her face deeper into Clara’s neck, terrified by the loud, shrill accusations bouncing down the corridor.

"Mrs. Vance, did you shove her into the vault?" Officer Davis asked, turning his gaze back to Clara with a hardened expression. His tone had shifted from professional curiosity to active suspicion.

"She left me no choice," Clara answered, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to maintain her composure. "She grabbed my daughter. She was dragging her inside. I had to protect my child."

"She’s lying!" Margaret cut in, stepping forward aggressively, though Officer Miller instinctively raised a hand to halt her advance. "She’s always hated me! She wants to institutionalize me so she and her husband can sell this property! Ask her about the basement, officers! Ask her what she keeps hidden down there!"

Clara’s breath hitched. The basement? Margaret had never mentioned the basement during their screaming matches. The lower level of the house had always been locked, a dusty relic of the estate’s past that Margaret strictly forbade anyone from entering. A cold shiver ran down Clara’s spine as she realized Margaret was deploying a diversion, casting doubt not just on the immediate incident, but on the very foundations of their household safety.

Before Clara could formulate a defense, the front door burst open once again, and Ari rushed into the hallway. His eyes darted from his disheveled mother to his shaken wife and daughter, his face pale with shock.

"What in God's name is going on here?" Ari demanded, stepping between the police officers and his family, his chest heaving. "Mom, why are you screaming? Clara, what did you do?"

"She locked me away, Ari!" Margaret wailed, pivoting her performance toward her son with practiced tears welling in her eyes. "Your wife has lost her mind! And if you go down to the basement right now, you'll see why she was so desperate to keep me quiet!"
