Chapter 13

The heavy steel door of the second basement vault slowly cracked open, releasing a plume of cool, climate-controlled air that smelled faintly of ozone and expensive perfume. Officer Davis raised his firearm, keeping his body positioned between the opening door and the Vances.
"Step away from the threshold, both of you," Davis ordered, his eyes locked on the dark interior space illuminated only by rows of blinking server lights and electronic monitoring screens.
Ari pulled Clara and Lily back toward the stairs, his chest heaving as he stared into the hidden room. Inside, the space was configured like a high-end surveillance and financial command center. Multiple computer monitors lined the walls, displaying live camera feeds from every single room in the house—including the bedroom, the living room, and the upstairs hallway. A sprawling web of financial transactions, offshore bank accounts, and legal document drafts glowed in the dim light.
"She was watching us," Ari whispered, the realization hitting him with crushing force. "Every conversation we had, every argument, every moment of our daily lives... she was recording it all."
"Not just recording it," Clara said, pointing toward a centralized server tower blinking furiously in the corner. "She was archiving everything to build a legal case against you, Ari. She wanted to prove you were 'unfit' so she could strip away your inheritance rights entirely and control Lily's custody permanently."
Officer Davis stepped into the vault, sweeping his flashlight across the desk where a laptop sat open. On the screen was an active data transfer window, currently uploading gigabytes of encrypted files to an external cloud server located overseas. Above the desk, a small intercom speaker crackled with static, and then a recorded voice filled the room—Margaret’s voice, cold and calculated, playing on an automated loop.
"If you are hearing this, the system has detected unauthorized access. All legal trusts and property titles have already been transferred to an irrevocable blind trust overseas. You own nothing."
Davis immediately reached over and slammed the laptop shut, cutting off the audio feed and terminating the data upload. He turned back to face the Vances, his expression grim. "This goes far beyond a domestic dispute or a false police report. This is industrial-grade fraud and illegal surveillance. We are seizing all of this hardware as federal evidence."

Ari stood in the doorway, staring at the monitors that had captured the most intimate, vulnerable moments of his family’s life. The grief of losing his father mingled with the bitter betrayal of his mother’s lifelong deception. He looked down at little Lily, who was quietly crying in Clara’s arms, and felt a cold, hard resolve settle deep in his chest.
"Let's go upstairs," Ari said quietly, his voice devoid of all previous hesitation. "Let's finish this."
