Chapter 4: Shadows in the Basement

The silence that followed Margaret’s declaration hung heavy and suffocating in the hallway. Officer Davis looked from Margaret to Ari, his hand hovering near his belt once more. Ari stared at his mother, the confusion on his face slowly giving way to a deep, unsettling dread. He knew his mother’s manipulative tendencies, but bringing up the forbidden basement—a place he hadn’t entered since he was a teenager—suggested a escalation that defied normal family disputes.
"Mom, what are you talking about?" Ari asked, his voice tight, lacking the warmth of a dutiful son. "The basement has been locked for twenty years. There’s nothing down there except old boxes and memories we left behind when Dad passed away."
"Is that what you think?" Margaret sneered, her tearful facade dropping for a split second to reveal a flash of cold, calculating malice. She straightened her cardigan, smoothing down the fabric with trembling hands. "Ask your precious wife why she was down there last night. Ask her why she was going through the records your father left behind—the records that prove this house doesn't belong to either of you."
Clara felt the color drain entirely from her face. Last night, unable to sleep due to the mounting tension and Margaret’s erratic behavior, she had indeed ventured down the narrow cellar stairs. She had found an old metal filing cabinet tucked behind a stack of moth-eaten furniture, containing documents that painted a very different picture of the family’s financial history than the one Ari had been told growing up. But she hadn't told Ari yet; she wanted to verify the facts before burdening him with more family trauma.
"You were snooping in my private estate records?" Ari asked, turning his gaze toward Clara, his expression shifting from protective to deeply wounded. "Clara, is that true? You went into the basement?"
"I heard noises down there, Ari," Clara said defensively, her green eyes flashing with frustration as she clutched Lily closer. "And your mother has been acting increasingly unstable. I was looking for the breaker box when I found something else. But that has nothing to do with what happened today! She tried to abduct our daughter into a steel vault!"

"It has everything to do with it!" Margaret interrupted, raising her voice to reclaim the attention of the police officers. "She found out the truth, officer! She knew I was going to evict them, so she staged an attack, locked me away, and called the police to cover her tracks! Arrest her!"
Officer Davis looked at his partner, clearly weighing the conflicting statements. Domestic disputes were notoriously complex, but an allegation of assault involving a minor shifted the legal calculus. He stepped closer to Clara, his expression unyielding. "Mrs. Vance, I’m going to need you to step outside with Officer Miller while we secure the premises and look into these counter-allegations. Please hand your daughter to your husband."
