Chapter 10

The scattered papers formed a chaotic white mosaic across the polished floorboards. Ari dropped to one knee, ignoring the police officers' warnings, and scooped up the single sheet of paper that had caught his eye. The heading read Medical Addendum – Estate Trusteeship, and the date was stamped just three days before his father’s sudden stroke and subsequent passing.
Officer Davis hovered nearby, shining his flashlight down to help illuminate the faded ink. Ari’s eyes raced across the typewritten paragraphs, his breathing growing increasingly shallow with every word.
"What does it say, Mr. Vance?" Officer Davis asked, his tone softening slightly as he sensed the profound devastation washing over the younger man.
"It... it says my father was diagnosed with severe neurodegenerative cognitive decline," Ari whispered, his voice cracking violently. "Not natural aging, but acute pharmaceutical toxicity. The attending physician noted suspicions of over-medication, but the report was sealed under a corporate wellness waiver controlled by..." Ari stopped, his eyes darting up to look at his mother standing at the end of the hallway. "Controlled by my mother's private trust."
Margaret’s composure cracked for the first time. The theatrical outrage vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness that was far more terrifying. She took a half-step backward, her hands clenching into tight fists inside the pockets of her beige cardigan.
"Your father was a broken, confused man," Margaret said, her voice dropping all pretense of warmth, turning sharp and venomous. "He didn't know what he was signing, and neither do you. I protected this estate when your father wanted to hand it over to strangers. I kept this roof over your head, and this is how you repay me? By listening to a gold-digger who only cares about the square footage?"
"You poisoned him?" Clara asked, stepping forward from the back of the hallway, her green eyes wide with horror as she connected the pieces. "My God... you didn't just manipulate the estate; you killed him to secure absolute control."
"That is a vicious, slanderous lie!" Margaret screamed, her voice rising to a pitch that rattled the glass in the front windows. She lunged forward with a speed that defied her sixty years, aiming a vicious shove toward Clara.
Officer Miller intercepted her instantly, grabbing Margaret by the upper arms and spinning her around to press her firmly against the hallway wall, securing her wrists behind her back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.

"Margaret Vance, you are under arrest for suspected financial fraud, elder abuse, and the unlawful restraint of a minor," Officer Davis declared, unhooking his radio to call for a transport unit. "You have the right to remain silent..."
As the metal cuffs locked into place, Lily began to cry softly again, burying her face in her father's chest. But the chaos was far from over. From the basement stairs, a sudden, heavy thud echoed through the floorboards—followed by the distinct sound of the basement door slowly swinging open from the inside.
