Chapter 5: The Handover

Clara’s arms tightened instinctively around Lily, her maternal instincts screaming against the directive. The little girl let out a fresh round of soft whimpers, her small fingers tangling in the fabric of Clara’s green shirt, sensing the danger and hostility vibrating through the adults in the room.

"I am not leaving my daughter," Clara said firmly, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. "She just watched her grandmother try to drag her into a metal cell. I am not handing her over to a household that is actively spinning a web of lies to cover up abuse."

"Clara, please," Ari pleaded, stepping forward and extending his hands tentatively. His eyes were wide with a mixture of betrayal and desperation. "Just give her to me. The officers are just doing their job. Let me hold Lily while you talk to them. You’re only making it look worse by resisting."

Officer Davis rested a hand on his holster, his voice hardening. "Ma'am, this is not a request. If you refuse to cooperate with standard procedure during an active domestic call, we will have to escort you out in cuffs. Hand the child to her father now."

Margaret stood off to the side, a triumphant, wicked smirk playing at the corners of her mouth as she watched Clara cornered by the law. The sight of her mother-in-law’s smug victory broke something inside Clara’s chest. Slowly, deliberately, Clara bent down and pressed a soft kiss to Lily’s blonde pigtails, whispering words of comfort against the little girl’s ear.

"Be a brave girl for Daddy, sweetheart," Clara whispered, her voice cracking slightly before she forced the control back into her tone. She stood up straight and transferred Lily into Ari’s trembling arms. Ari immediately pulled the little girl close, burying his face in her hair.

Officer Miller stepped forward, gently guiding Clara by the elbow toward the front door. "Step outside onto the porch, Mrs. Vance. We need to clear the hallway."

As Clara walked past Margaret, the older woman leaned in close, her breath smelling faintly of stale peppermint. "You think you can win, girl? This house is mine, and everyone in it belongs to me."

Clara ignored the venom in Margaret’s voice, stepping out into the cool evening air where the flashing cruiser lights painted the porch in alternating shades of red and blue. She stood by the railing, wrapping her arms around herself to ward off the sudden chill, her mind racing to figure out how to prove her innocence. Behind her, inside the house, Officer Davis turned to Ari and Margaret. "Now, let's take a look at that basement you mentioned."
