Chapter 2

The two uniformed officers stepped past the living room threshold, their boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. Officer Davis, a broad-shouldered man with a stern jaw, immediately assessed the tense atmosphere. Beside him, Officer Miller scanned the brightly lit hallway, his hand resting instinctively near the holster of his dark belt. They took in Clara’s disheveled green shirt, the tear-stained face of little Lily clinging desperately to her mother’s neck, and the towering dark metal walk-in vault door looming at the far end of the corridor.
"Ma'am, dispatch received a frantic call about a confinement," Officer Davis said, his voice measured and authoritative as he approached Clara. "Whose house is this, and where is the person inside that vault?"
"It’s my husband’s family home, though we’ve been living here to care for her," Clara replied, her voice remaining remarkably steady despite the adrenaline still humming through her veins. "The woman inside is Margaret, my mother-in-law. She is sixty years old, and she just tried to force my five-year-old daughter into that vault."
Officer Miller frowned, stepping closer to the heavy steel door. A muffled curse, followed by another sharp blow against the metal, reverberated through the corridor. The sheer thickness of the industrial-grade door muffled the sounds, but the palpable malice behind the strikes was undeniable.
"Step away from the door, please, both of you," Officer Miller instructed gently, gesturing for Clara and Lily to move toward the living room archway. He produced a heavy set of master keys from his utility belt while Davis kept his posture guarded, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Clara. "Mrs. Vance, locking a family member inside a security vault is a serious criminal offense, regardless of the provocation. You mentioned she tried to take your child?"

"She grabbed Lily by her dress and tried to drag her across the floor," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave as the memory flashed vividly behind her eyes. "She screamed at her. She’s been slipping mentally for months, but today she crossed a line that I cannot forgive. The custody papers for Lily’s schooling were on the counter; she wanted to punish me by hiding my child away where no one could find her."
Officer Davis nodded slowly, absorbing the gravity of the situation. Officer Miller inserted a brass key into the vault’s manual override cylinder, turning it with a heavy mechanical click that echoed loudly in the quiet house. The thick steel bolts began to retract with a low, hydraulic hiss, signaling that the barrier was about to give way. Clara held Lily tighter, bracing herself for the inevitable explosion of fury from the woman who had terrorized their home for years. As the heavy door slowly creaked open, revealing the dim, cavernous interior of the vault, a hand reached out from the shadows, pointing an accusing finger directly at Clara.
