Chapter 6 - The Shadow in the Kitchen

The overhead fluorescent light flickered, casting strobe-like pulses over the kitchen entrance. Standing in the doorway was a gaunt, broad-shouldered man wearing a tattered gray mechanic's jacket. A thick, jagged scar snaked across the left side of his jawline—a scar that had conveniently been omitted from old family photographs, but one that matched the aggressive black marker lines on the digital documents.

It was David. He was alive, breathing, and holding a heavy steel pipe wrench with terrifying casualness.

"Well, well, well," David rasped, his voice sounding like gravel grinding inside a cement mixer. His eyes swept over the police officers with cold disdain before locking onto Clara. "I told you to keep the cops out of this, Clara. You just can't help ruining everything, can you?"

Miller stepped forward, her service weapon held steady and level, aimed squarely at David's chest.

"Drop the weapon right now! Drop it or I will fire!" Miller commanded, her voice cutting through the tense air like a razor.

David didn't even flinch. He offered a slow, mocking smile, his eyes darting toward Chloe, who was pressed flat against the hallway wall, trembling violently.

"Go ahead, officer," David goaded, taking a slow step forward into the light. "Shoot me. But before you do, you might want to ask the dear girl in the brown sweater who actually signed over the second mortgage on this house last Tuesday."

Chloe gasped, her back sliding down the wall until she was half-crouched on the floor.

"That's a lie!" Chloe choked out, tears blurring her vision. "I never signed anything! I was at work!"

"Were you?" David chuckled darkly, his eyes gleaming with malicious amusement. "Check your digital signature logs, sweetheart. Your mother gave me the access code months ago. She was cutting you out to save her own skin."

Clara shook her head frantically, stepping in front of Chloe to shield her from David's toxic gaze.

"Don't listen to him, Chloe! He's lying! He forged those documents using your old college applications!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with desperation.

Miller kept her gun trained on David, but her eyes flicked momentarily toward Clara, weighing the chaotic web of accusations and counter-accusations. The male officer moved swiftly along the wall, attempting to flank David from the side to cut off his escape route back toward the rear exit.

David saw the movement out of the corner of his eye. Instead of panicking, he smirked, raised his left hand, and clicked a small, heavy-duty electronic key fob attached to his belt loop.

A loud, electronic click echoed from somewhere deep beneath the floorboards of the kitchen, followed immediately by a sharp, acrid smell of burning plastic.
