Chapter 4 - The Marked Face

The sharp snap of the front door latch turning made everyone in the room freeze. Parker’s hand was gripping the brass knob, his eyes darting frantically between the open exit and Officer Miller’s commanding stance.
"Don't even think about it, Parker," Miller said, her voice dropping into a low, authoritative register that brooked no argument. She didn't draw her weapon, but her hand rested firmly and meaningfully over her holster. "You’re a material witness now. Try to leave, and you’ll find yourself in the back of that cruiser instead of her."
Parker froze, his fingers slowly peeling away from the brass. He swallowed hard, letting his arms drop to his sides.
Chloe stood frozen a few feet away, her eyes glued to the small screen of Miller’s body camera. The scratched-out face on the digital document seemed to stare back at her with a ghostly familiarity, even though the features were obliterated by heavy black ink. A cold sweat broke out across the back of her neck beneath the thick wool of her sweater.
"Who did that, Parker?" Chloe demanded, her voice trembling as she turned her burning gaze from the screen to the young man by the door. "Who crossed out that face? Was that... was that him?"
Clara stepped forward, wincing slightly as her bruised ribs protested the movement. She reached out a tentative hand, her fingertips brushing against Chloe’s arm, but Chloe flinched away, unable to process the shifting tectonic plates of her reality.
"It was your uncle, David," Clara answered quietly, the confession hanging in the air like poison gas. "Or at least, what's left of him after your father's side of the family got through with the estate paperwork."
Miller tapped the screen again, bringing up a digital ledger with thousands of dollars moving through complex offshore accounts. The dates on the transactions matched the timeline of the household's escalating violence.
"Embezzlement, coercion, and systematic asset stripping," Miller read aloud, her eyes scanning the financial data with professional ease. She looked up at Clara. "This isn't just a domestic dispute. This is a targeted extortion campaign using this house as collateral."
Clara nodded slowly, a bitter tear finally cutting a clean path through the dirt and dried blood on her cheek.
"He told me if I didn't sign the deed over, he’d make sure Chloe never walked out of this house alive," Clara whispered, her voice breaking completely. "He was the one who pushed her into the wall tonight. I jumped in between them. That’s how I got these bruises."
Chloe staggered backward, her hip hitting the corner of the hallway console table. The baseball bat lay forgotten on the floor.
"No," Chloe breathed, shaking her head in fierce denial. "Uncle David died three years ago in a car crash. We went to his funeral."
Parker let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh, his eyes wide with stark terror.

"He didn't die," Parker blurted out, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "He just changed his name and moved into the guest house out back."
