Chapter 15 - The Final Truth

The harsh, electronic chime of the tactical radio cut through the quiet morning light like a knife. Officer Miller’s hand snapped instantly to her belt, her thumb depressing the transmission stud as she lifted the receiver to her ear.
"Miller," she spoke crisply, her professional mask sliding back into place instantly.
She listened intently for a few seconds, her brow furrowing deeper with every passing word spoken by the dispatch coordinator on the other end of the encrypted channel. The color seemed to drain slightly from her cheeks, a subtle shift that did not go unnoticed by Clara or Chloe.
"Repeat that," Miller instructed sharply, her eyes darting across the room toward the open front door where the federal transport vehicles were idling in the driveway. "Are you certain?"
She clicked the radio off and lowered her arm slowly. The silence in the room became absolute once more, heavier and more suffocating than any moment that had preceded it.
Chloe sat upright, the blanket slipping from her shoulders. The brown sweater felt tight against her skin again.
"What is it?" Chloe asked, her voice trembling slightly. "What happened?"
Miller took a deep, measured breath, looking down at the legal documents still resting on Clara’s lap before raising her gaze to meet Chloe’s wide, terrified eyes.
"That was transport command," Miller said slowly, her voice carefully controlled. "The vehicle carrying Thomas and David... it never made it to the federal holding facility."
Clara stood up so fast her knees buckled slightly, catching herself on the edge of the coffee table.
"What do you mean it never made it?" Clara demanded, her voice rising in sudden panic. "Did they escape?"
"No," Miller answered, stepping toward the front door where the pale morning light was turning into a bright, blinding sunrise. "The transport van was intercepted four blocks from here by an unmarked tactical unit carrying forged federal credentials. They didn't break out... someone high up inside the Justice Department just signed an emergency executive order transferring their custody to an undisclosed black-site facility."
Chloe covered her mouth with her hands, a choked sob escaping her throat.
"It's never really over, is it?" Chloe whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes as she stared out the front window at the empty street where the convoy had vanished.

Miller didn't answer with comforting platitudes. She simply reached down, picked up her cap, and placed it firmly on her head, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the sun was burning through the last remnants of the night.
"No," Miller said quietly, turning toward the door as her radio crackled to life again with a new set of coded coordinates. "It was only the very first chapter."
