Chapter 2 - The Flash Drive Secret

The harsh fluorescent light hummed overhead, casting long, skeletal shadows across the peeling wallpaper of the hallway. Officer Miller’s words hung in the stale air, heavy with unspoken implications. Parker stared down at the small plastic flash drive in his palm, his thumb tracing its smooth, cold edge as if it were a detonator.

Chloe lowered the baseball bat an inch, the wood slipping slightly against her sweaty palms. Her brown sweater felt suffocatingly hot, trapping the sour stench of panic.

"What is that?" Chloe demanded, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous whisper. She pointed the tip of the bat toward Parker's hand. "What did you just give her?"

Parker didn't answer immediately. He looked at Clara, whose bruised face remained locked in a mask of grim determination, refusing to meet her daughter's eyes. The male officer shifted his weight, his heavy duty belt clinking against his holster, reminding everyone in the room that the state was currently holding all the cards.

Miller stepped closer to Parker, her olive jacket rustling with the movement. She didn’t reach for the flash drive yet; instead, she watched the young man’s micro-expressions, cataloging every twitch of his jaw and every dart of his eyes toward the basement door.

"Parker," Miller repeated, her voice remarkably calm, cutting through the rising tide of hysteria. "You heard me. Preserve everything. That means the digital trail, too. Hand it over before this house becomes a crime scene we can't walk back from."

Clara finally broke her silence, letting out a sharp, bitter laugh that ended in a sharp wince as her split lip pulled tight.

"Don't do it, Parker," Clara warned, blood pooling slightly at the corner of her mouth. "Don't let her see what's on there. She thinks she knows the whole story, but she’s only reading the very last page."

Chloe’s breath hitched. She took a threatening step toward Parker, the baseball bat hovering in the air between them.

"If there’s a recording," Chloe hissed, her voice shaking violently, "if you’ve been spying on us..."

"I wasn't spying," Parker interrupted, his voice cracking with genuine terror. He finally looked directly at Chloe, his eyes wide and pleading. "I was backing her up. Your mother asked me to keep copies of every single incident for the last six months."

Miller’s hand shot out, her fingers closing swiftly over the flash drive in Parker's palm, pulling it free before Chloe could swing the bat.

"Evidence secured," Miller murmured, plugging the drive directly into her body-worn camera’s diagnostic port to read the file directory.

The small LED light on the camera blinked green once, then turned a solid, chilling crimson.
