Chapter 10 - Locked Below

The sudden slam of the deadbolt echoed through the concrete stairwell like a gunshot. Absolute darkness swallowed the basement as the battery-powered work light on Miller’s flashlight flickered once and died, leaving only the dim, ambient glow of her body-worn camera pinned to her chest.

"Hey! Open this door!" Miller shouted, lunging up the stairs and throwing her shoulder against the heavy wood. The frame splintered slightly, but the deadbolt held firm.

Parker let out a panicked cry, stumbling backward into a pile of empty cardboard boxes.

"Who's up there? Who locked us in?" Parker yelled, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek.

Chloe stood frozen in the center of the dark cellar, her breath coming in short, hyperventilating gasps. The heavy wool of her brown sweater suddenly felt like a cage, trapping her body heat and turning the air thick and claustrophobic.

"It was Parker's car keys," Chloe whispered, the realization hitting her with the force of a physical blow. She turned slowly to face the young man standing in the shadows near the corner. "You didn't just happen to have that flash drive, Parker. You let him in through the side gate, didn't you?"

Parker pressed his back against the damp stone wall, his eyes wide with stark terror.

"I had to!" Parker sobbed, sliding down until he was sitting on the concrete floor with his knees pulled up to his chest. "They said if I didn't help them secure the ledger, my family would lose everything! They own the debt on my mother’s medical treatments!"

Miller turned away from the locked door, her face a mask of cold, controlled fury. She walked over to Parker, pulled him up by his collar with one swift motion, and pinned him against the stone wall.

"Who else is up there, Parker?" Miller demanded, her voice vibrating with restrained violence. "Give me names right now, or I swear I’ll let the state throw the book at you as an accessory to kidnapping and extortion."

"I don't know! I swear I don't know!" Parker wept, tears streaming down his face as he clawed at Miller's grip. "They just said someone higher up was coming to clean house tonight before the federal marshals executed the search warrant!"

Clara stepped out of the shadows, her battered face illuminated by the faint red glow of Miller’s body camera. She didn't look scared anymore; instead, a grim, terrifying resolve had settled over her features.

"Federal marshals?" Clara asked quietly, looking directly at Miller. "So you aren't just local patrol, are you, Officer Miller?"

Miller let go of Parker, letting him slide back down to the floor. She slowly straightened her olive jacket, her eyes fixed on Clara.

"Internal Affairs and Federal Task Force," Miller admitted evenly. "We’ve been tracking this asset-laundering ring for fourteen months. This house was the central hub. But someone leaked our operational timeline to the suspects tonight."

Miller paused, her gaze shifting slowly from Clara to Chloe, and finally resting on the heavy leather ledger still lying open on the floor.

"And based on the access logs on that flash drive," Miller added, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper, "the leak didn't come from the department. It came from inside this family."
