Chapter 11 - The Family Leak

The accusation hung in the damp air of the basement, heavy and suffocating. Chloe stepped back, her hands flying up as if to ward off a physical blow.
"That's a lie," Chloe breathed, her voice shaking violently. "I didn't leak anything! I didn't even know any of this existed until twenty minutes ago!"
"Not you," Miller said, her eyes never leaving Clara’s face. She stepped closer to the older woman, who stood tall despite the bruises marring her skin. "The digital signature on the operational data packet downloaded from our precinct’s secure server was authenticated using an encrypted residential key. A key that was registered to this exact address under a secondary administrator account."
Clara didn't flinch. She met Miller’s piercing gaze with a dead, hollow stare, the kind of look worn only by someone who had already calculated the cost of their own destruction and found it acceptable.
"You think I sold out my own husband's investigation?" Clara asked, her voice shockingly calm.
"I think you did whatever was necessary to keep your daughter breathing when Thomas put a gun to your head three years ago," Miller countered sharply. "Am I wrong, Clara? Did you give them the precinct's backdoor access code in exchange for Chloe's safety?"
Chloe stared at her mother, the room spinning around her. The brown sweater felt suffocating, choking her.
"Mom... tell her she's lying," Chloe pleaded, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. "Tell me she's lying right now!"
Clara closed her eyes for a long moment, taking a slow, shuddering breath. When she opened them, the tears were gone, replaced by an agonizing, bitter truth.
"I had to, Chloe," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. "They had you cornered at your university dorm. They had photos of your room, your schedule, your friends. Thomas told me if I didn't cooperate, you wouldn't make it to graduation. What would you have done?"
Parker whimpered from the corner, his head buried in his arms.
Before Chloe could process the confession, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the top of the basement stairs. The deadbolt slid back with a loud, mechanical snap, and the heavy wooden door slowly creaked open, revealing a pair of polished black dress shoes standing on the landing above.
A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped into the dim light of the stairwell, holding a small, silencer-equipped pistol pointed downward with terrifying casualness.
"Well, well, looks like the family reunion is finally complete," the man said smoothly, his voice rich and cultured, completely at odds with the violence of the night.
It was Thomas.

And behind him, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker, stood someone Chloe never, ever expected to see.
