Chapter 13 - The Final Leverage

The air in the basement grew instantly heavy, thick with the scent of damp concrete and impending death. Thomas’s finger hovered menacingly over the trigger of the silenced pistol, his eyes locked onto Arthur with cold, calculating venom.
"Don't do it, Arthur," Miller warned, her hand dropping imperceptibly closer to her own holster, though she knew the draw would be too slow at this close range. "Once you hand over that drive, you're signing your own death warrant. He doesn't leave loose ends."
Arthur didn't blink. He stood frozen on the lower step, the heavy iron fireplace poker clutched tightly in his right hand. He looked at Thomas, then over at Clara, whose bruised face was stark and pale in the dim red glow of the body camera, and finally down at Chloe, who was backed helplessly against the damp stone wall.
"You think you hold all the cards, Thomas," Arthur said, his voice surprisingly calm, carrying a chilling undercurrent of absolute finality. "You think the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands are secure because you have the master keys."
Thomas’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. A micro-expression of unease flickered across his eyes.
"What are you talking about?" Thomas demanded, his voice sharpening. "The servers are encrypted with military-grade protocols. No one can touch them without my biometric signature."
Arthur let out a slow, deliberate breath. He reached into the pocket of his gray work jacket and pulled out a small, ruggedized satellite transmitter—the kind used by elite financial intelligence units to ping secure global nodes.
"Your biometric signature is tied to your phone, Thomas," Arthur said, holding up the device. "Which I managed to sync with the basement mainframe while you were busy arguing with the local patrol officers upstairs. The entire network is currently executing a hard wipe."
Thomas’s face drained of all color. He glanced down frantically at his smartphone, tapping the screen with a trembling thumb. The display flashed a solid, glaring crimson warning: System Error: Master Override Initiated.
"No! You son of a bitch!" Thomas roared, lifting the silenced pistol with shaking hands, aiming directly at Arthur's head.
Before Thomas could pull the trigger, Miller moved with blinding speed. She lunged forward, tackling Arthur hard to the concrete floor just as a muffled pfft echoed through the stairwell. A 9mm bullet punched a neat, splintering hole into the wooden wall right where Arthur’s head had been a split second before.
Parker shrieked, curling into a tight ball on the floor.
Thomas scrambled backward up the stairs, turning to flee toward the front exit, but the heavy oak door at the top was suddenly kicked wide open from the outside, framing a half-dozen tactical federal agents in full riot gear with assault rifles raised.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapon! Hands on your head!" the lead agent roared, floodlights blinding everyone in the hallway.

Thomas stopped dead in his tracks, dropped the pistol, and slowly raised his empty hands into the air as the heavy zip-ties snapped shut around his wrists with a sharp, definitive click.
