Chapter 12 - The Unthinkable Ally

The flickering red light from the body camera painted long, dancing shadows up the wooden stairs, illuminating the face of the person standing directly behind Thomas.
Chloe froze, her jaw dropping open in sheer disbelief. The breath rushed out of her lungs as if she had been punched in the stomach.
"Dad?" Chloe whispered, the word tasting like ash in her mouth.
Standing on the landing, wearing his familiar old gray work jacket and holding a heavy iron fireplace poker with a steady, unyielding grip, was the man who had supposedly died in a fiery car crash three years ago. Her father. Alive.
Clara didn't look surprised. She merely closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of utter exhaustion as she looked at the man she had mourned in secret for thirty-six months.
"You're late, Arthur," Thomas said smoothly, glancing back over his shoulder with a cold, condescending smirk. He kept the silenced pistol aimed levelly at Officer Miller’s chest. "I thought you told me the basement security system was foolproof."
Arthur didn't smile. His face was carved from stone, his eyes hollow and dead as he looked down at his wife and daughter trapped in the damp cellar.
"It was foolproof," Arthur replied, his voice flat and devoid of any warmth. "Until you decided to start shooting up the living room and drawing local patrol units to the front door like a reckless amateur."
Miller didn't flinch. She kept her hands positioned close to her utility belt, her eyes calculating the angles, measuring the distance between herself and Thomas’s weapon.
"Arthur Vance," Miller said, her voice steady and authoritative, cutting through the heavy tension. "Former forensic accountant, presumed deceased. You’re aiding and abetting a fugitive felony ring. Put the poker down, Arthur. You’ve been running for three years, but federal warrants don't expire."
Arthur slowly descended the first two steps, the iron poker dragging against the wooden banister with a harsh, grating screech. He stopped just short of the bottom landing, looking directly at Chloe, who was trembling uncontrollably in her oversized brown sweater.
"I didn't run to hide from the law, Chloe," Arthur said, his voice cracking slightly for the first time, revealing a sliver of genuine paternal anguish beneath the cold exterior. "I ran to keep you alive. Thomas had your name on the first liquidation list."
"You lied to me!" Chloe screamed, the dam finally breaking as tears streamed hot and fast down her cheeks. "You let us mourn you! You let me live in fear every single day, while you were working with them all along!"
"I wasn't working with them, sweetie," Arthur said softly, raising his left hand to show a heavy set of digital encryption cuffs locked around his own wrist. "I was a prisoner in my own life. Just like your mother."
Thomas let out a sharp, dry laugh, raising his silenced pistol slightly higher, aiming it directly at Arthur’s chest.

"Enough with the family drama," Thomas sneered, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "Arthur, hand me the flash drive from Miller's belt, or I start with the girl."
