Chapter 5 - The Guest House Key

The mention of the guest house sucked all the remaining oxygen out of the narrow hallway. The old ranch house had a small, detached structure sitting near the overgrown tree line at the edge of the property, a place Chloe had been strictly forbidden to enter since her early teens under the guise of it being used for old storage.

Miller’s expression hardened instantly, shifting from a mediator of domestic chaos into a tactical officer assessing a clear and present threat. She unclipped a high-lumen tactical flashlight from her utility belt, the heavy metal body clicking with authority.

"How long has he been staying out there, Parker?" Miller asked, her voice sharp enough to draw blood.

Parker stared at the linoleum floor, refusing to look up. "Almost a year. Ever since the foreclosure notices started showing up in the mail. He said... he said if Clara didn't hand over the title, he’d burn the whole place down with both of them inside."

Chloe’s hands flew to her mouth, stifling a ragged gasp. The heavy brown sweater felt like a lead weight dragging her down into the floorboards. Everything she thought she knew—her mother’s sudden mood swings, the strange noises coming from the backyard late at night, the missing documents from the home office—suddenly snapped into a horrific, coherent mosaic.

"You knew," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide and wet as she stared at her mother. "You knew he was out there the whole time, and you let him terrorize us? You let him hit me?"

"I was trying to keep you away from him!" Clara cried out, stepping toward her daughter with her hands raised defensively, tears streaming freely down her battered cheeks. "You don't understand how deep his reach goes, Chloe. If he realized you remembered him, he would have..."

Clara stopped abruptly as a heavy, metallic thump echoed from the back door leading out to the yard.

Everyone froze. The sound was unmistakable—someone had just kicked the exterior wooden latch of the back porch.

Miller raised her hand, signaling for absolute silence. She drew her service pistol with practiced, fluid motion, the metal clearing leather with a sharp hiss. She motioned for the male officer to flank the kitchen doorway while she took the lead.

"Police! Stay where you are!" Miller shouted into the darkness of the kitchen, her voice ringing with tactical command.

A heavy groan answered from the dark corridor leading to the back exit, followed by the sound of dragging footsteps shuffling across the hardwood floor.

Parker screamed, diving behind the living room sofa as a shadowy figure stepped out from the kitchen threshold, holding a heavy wrench in one hand.
