Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Study

The live feed on the massive data screen transfixed everyone in the cathedral. On the crisp high-definition display, a figure dressed entirely in black was frantically spinning the dial of the vintage wall safe located inside Arthur Vance’s private study at the old estate. The camera angle showed the intruder working with practiced speed, ignoring the expensive artwork and focusing entirely on the concealed metal compartment holding the original handwritten ledgers.

Julian stared at the screen in absolute disbelief. "That's... that's impossible. The estate is locked down by biometric security."

"Not anymore," a calm, synthesized voice answered from the back of the chapel.

Everyone turned to see Chloe standing near the baptismal font. Her phone was raised, projecting the audio from the study feed directly into the cathedral's sound system. She wasn't crying anymore. Her eyes were hard, devoid of the naive loyalty she had displayed earlier in the morning.

"What did you do, Chloe?" Helen shrieked from the floor, clutching her green top as she glared at her daughter with sheer betrayal.

"I gave the override code to independent auditors twenty minutes ago," Chloe said evenly, her voice devoid of emotion. "When I realized you both lied about Uncle Arthur, I checked the smart-home logs. Someone was logging into his study remotely this morning, trying to wipe the hard drives before the feds arrived."

On the screen, the safe door finally swung open with a heavy metallic click. The masked figure reached inside, pulling out a thick, leather-bound book and several microcassettes, holding them up to the camera with deliberate mockery.

The federal agent handling Julian paused, looking from the screen back to Julian and Helen. "Who else has the master keys to that estate?"

Julian shook his head frantically. "No one! Just me, my mother, and... and corporate security." He stopped, his eyes darting toward Marcus.

Marcus didn't flinch. He slowly pulled out his corporate radio and unclipped it from his belt, dropping it onto the stone floor with a dull thud. "My contract was with the holding company, Mr. Vance. When the assets freeze, my loyalty shifts to the highest bidder with a valid subpoena."

Clara watched the unfolding betrayal with a grim sense of validation. She looked back down at the medical team working tirelessly over Arthur. The paramedics delivered a second shock, and the erratic beeping of the monitor mercifully flattened into a steady, stronger rhythm. Arthur gasped, his eyes fluttering open as color slowly returned to his pale cheeks.

"He's back," the lead paramedic breathed out, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Get the stretcher ready. We need to transport him immediately."

As the EMTs lifted Arthur onto the gurney, the old man reached out and grabbed Clara’s sleeve, pulling her close despite his weakness.

"The person on that screen," Arthur whispered hoarsely into her ear, "isn't an intruder. It's the person who helped my nephew frame you."
