Chapter 8 - A Sudden Collapse

Arthur gasped for air, his knees buckling as the sudden shock and stress of the confrontation overwhelmed his fragile heart. Clara reacted instantly, dropping her train and rushing forward to catch the old man before he hit the ground. Julian cried out in panic, straining against the handcuffs as Marcus and the federal agents rushed to assist.
"Get a medic! Call an ambulance now!" Clara shouted, her voice echoing through the vaulted cathedral as she lowered Arthur gently onto the polished stone floor.
Helen crawled on her hands and knees toward her brother-in-law, her face wet with frantic tears. "Arthur! Arthur, please! Don't do this!" she sobbed, the polished mask of corporate arrogance completely gone, replaced by raw, desperate terror.
Arthur’s breathing was shallow and ragged. He reached out a trembling, aged hand, his fingers brushing against Clara’s wrist. "The safe... in my old study," he managed to whisper, his eyes growing heavy. "The physical ledgers... they're still there."
"Save your strength, Arthur. The ambulance is on its way," Clara said, pressing her palm gently against his chest to monitor his heartbeat while motioning for Marcus to clear the area.
Julian stood frozen a few feet away, tears finally spilling over his dark beard. The handcuffs bit sharply into his wrists, but he didn't feel the pain. He watched the man he had tried to erase from the world slipping away, realizing that his entire empire, his freedom, and his family were collapsing simultaneously.
The federal agent spoke urgently into his shoulder radio, confirming the medical emergency and demanding an expedited paramedic response inside the cathedral. Within moments, the heavy doors swung open again as emergency medical technicians rushed in with a defibrillator and an oxygen tank, moving with practiced efficiency.
The EMTs pushed Clara and Helen back gently to clear space around the fallen patriarch. They slapped oxygen pads over Arthur’s face and attached the heart monitor, the machine beeping with an irregular, frantic rhythm that kept everyone in agonizing suspense.
"He's going into cardiac arrest," the lead paramedic announced, his voice tense. "Clear the area! Charge to two hundred!"
As the paddles were pressed against Arthur’s chest, the cathedral lights flickered once, plunging the grand venue into a dim, amber glow as the backup generators kicked in. Clara stood back, her heart pounding against her ribs as she watched the desperate attempt to revive the man who held the final key to the Vance family's dark history.

And then, right as the paramedic pressed the shock button, the data screen behind the altar abruptly changed from corporate logos to a live security feed of Arthur's old study, revealing a masked figure standing in front of the hidden safe.
