Chapter 10 - The Inside Operative

Arthur’s words hung heavily in the air, cutting through the ambient hum of the cathedral's backup generators. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. She looked back up at the massive data screen where the masked figure in the study had just turned to face the security camera, slowly peeling back the black fabric mask to reveal a familiar face.
It was Marcus’s second-in-command, a security contractor named Vance had personally hired three years ago to manage high-level risk assessments.
Julian let out a hollow, broken laugh that bordered on hysterical. "Even you," Julian muttered, staring at Marcus with hollow eyes. "You were selling us out the entire time."
Marcus didn't blink or offer a defense. He simply walked toward the heavy oak doors, stepping past the federal agents who wisely chose not to stop him yet, given that his digital trail was actively feeding real-time intel to their command center. "Business is business, Julian. You taught me that loyalty is just a line item on a balance sheet."
The federal agent holding Julian’s handcuffs tightened his grip. "We'll deal with your contractors later. Right now, you're coming with us."
As the agents began escorting Julian down the center aisle toward the exit, Helen tried to stand up, but her legs gave out entirely. She collapsed back against the wooden pew, sobbing openly, her grand social standing completely reduced to ash in less than an hour. Chloe stood a few feet away, watching her family dissolve with a cold, unsettling detachment. She didn't offer her mother a hand.
Clara walked alongside the paramedics as they wheeled Arthur toward the waiting ambulance outside the grand double doors. The crisp morning air hit her face, carrying the scent of impending rain. The wedding venue behind her was now a crime scene, the flowers and ribbons mocking the wreckage of lies that had sustained it.
Arthur gripped Clara’s hand tightly as they loaded his gurney into the back of the vehicle. "Don't stop here, Clara," he urged, his voice raspy but fierce. "The network goes deeper than Julian. The board members who voted to institutionalize me... they're still out there."
"I know," Clara replied, climbing into the back of the ambulance to accompany him to the hospital. "We're just getting started."
The ambulance doors slammed shut, cutting off the noise of the retreating crowd and the flashing police lights. Inside the sterile, brightly lit interior of the vehicle, the heart monitor beeped steadily as the driver pulled away from the curb.
Arthur closed his eyes for a moment, gathering his thoughts before handing Clara a small, encrypted flash drive he had hidden inside his jacket lining the entire time. "This contains the names of every silent partner who funded the shell companies. Give this to the federal prosecutor before midnight, or they'll bury the investigation."
May you like
Clara took the drive, feeling its cold metallic edge against her palm. Just as she slipped it into the pocket of her slip dress, her phone buzzed with an incoming encrypted message from an unknown sender containing a single sentence and a live coordinate.
