Chapter 5 - The Digital Noose

The physical dossier contained hard evidence, but the digital fallout was happening faster than Julian could comprehend. His smartphone began vibrating violently in his tuxedo pocket, buzzing with non-stop alerts from bank fraud departments, board members demanding an emergency meeting, and federal regulators freezing corporate assets. He pulled the phone out, stared at the screen, and let it slip from his fingers, watching it shatter against the stone floor at the base of the altar.

"It's over, Julian," Clara said softly, her voice barely above a whisper, yet every person in the room heard it clearly. "The servers have already uploaded the mirrored drives to the district attorney's public portal. By the time the reception dinner was supposed to be served, the federal agents will be walking through those front doors."

Helen stumbled forward, grabbing the edge of the altar for support. Her face had turned an alarming shade of pale grey. "You planned this," she wheezed, her voice shaking with rage and fear. "You led him on for months, playing the devoted fiancée, just to set this trap on your wedding day."

"I loved him," Clara replied, and for the first time, a flicker of genuine sorrow crossed her features. "That's the tragedy in all of this. I ignored every warning sign because I wanted to believe he was better than his father. But when I found out he was planning to frame me for the embezzlement when the audit hit, I realized I had to protect myself."

Julian clenched his fists so hard his nails dug into his palms. "You manipulative bitch. You knew about the offshore accounts from the beginning and you said nothing. You strung me along just to humiliate me publicly."

"I gave you a dozen chances to confess, Julian," Clara countered, stepping closer to him without fear. "Every time we sat down to talk about our future, you doubled down on the lies. You thought my silence meant complicity. You were wrong."

Chloe walked up to Clara, her anger momentarily redirected from her brother. "Did you know about this all along, Clara? Why didn't you come to me? We were friends."

"Because your mother and Julian controlled your finances too, Chloe," Clara said gently, placing a hand on the younger woman's shoulder. "Look at your tablet. Your trust fund was liquidated last week to cover their margin calls."

Chloe pulled out her phone with trembling fingers, tapped her banking app, and let out a choked sob as she saw her zeroed-out balance.

Marcus suddenly stepped forward from the back of the hall, his radio crackling to life with a chilling message that silenced the remaining murmur in the room.
