Chapter 7 - The Vestry Intruder

The heavy wooden door of the vestry creaked open slowly, drawing the attention of the federal agents, Julian, and the remaining guests. Out stepped an elderly man leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane. His silver hair was unkempt, and his tweed jacket hung loosely over a frail frame. It was Arthur Vance, Julian’s estranged uncle and the original founder of Vance Architectural Holdings—a man whom Julian and Helen had publicly declared legally incompetent and institutionalized three years prior.

Julian’s eyes bulged in pure horror. "No," he whispered, shaking his head frantically. "That's impossible. He's... he's in the care facility upstate."

Arthur stopped at the edge of the altar, his eyes sharp and lucid, belying the narrative of mental decline that Helen had spent millions constructing. He looked at Helen crumpled on the floor, at Julian in handcuffs, and finally at Clara standing in the center aisle.

"They tried to put me away, Clara," Arthur said, his voice raspy but surprisingly strong. "They drugged me, forged my signature on the board resignation papers, and stole my life's work to fund their reckless expansions."

Helen scrambled up from the floor, her composure entirely shattered. "Arthur, you're delusional! The doctors said your dementia was irreversible!"

"The doctors were on your payroll, Helen," Arthur retorted, tapping his cane sharply against the stone floor. "Just like the accountants, just like the compliance officers, and just like the shell companies you used to bleed our family legacy dry."

The lead federal agent paused, lowering the handcuffs slightly as he assessed the new development. He looked at Clara for confirmation. Clara simply nodded, reaching into her slip dress to pull out a sealed medical and legal file stamped by a federal judge just hours before the wedding ceremony began.

"He's the rightful majority shareholder," Clara explained to the agent, stepping forward to hand over the second half of the dossier. "These documents prove that Julian and Helen conspired to commit corporate kidnapping and elder abuse to seize control of the firm's assets."

Julian lunged forward toward his uncle, sheer rage overriding his self-preservation instinct. "You ungrateful old bastard! You ruined everything!"

Marcus and the federal agents reacted instantly. Marcus grabbed Julian’s shoulder, spinning him around and forcing his hands behind his back, while the lead agent snapped the steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp click.

"Julian Vance," the agent repeated coldly, "you are also being charged with conspiracy to commit elder abuse and corporate kidnapping."

Arthur watched his nephew get restrained without a shred of triumph, only a profound, heavy sadness. He looked at Clara and softly said, "Thank you, my dear. You saved more than just the company today."

Before Clara could reply, Arthur’s hand flew to his chest, his cane slipping from his grasp and clattering loudly against the stone floor.
