Chapter 1 - The Descent Begins

The grand cathedral hummed with an anxious silence that felt heavier than the crystal chandeliers overhead. Julian stood before the altar, his posture rigid inside his classic black tuxedo, his dark beard unable to hide the nervous twitch in his jaw. Clara faced him, her dark hair tied back with severe elegance, her beaded wedding dress catching the cold light of the venue. Behind them, the massive data screen glowed with harmless corporate logos, masking a digital vault of dark secrets. Clara did not smile. She looked straight into Julian’s eyes with a chilling, resolute calmness that made the air in the room freeze.

"You already know what's underneath, don't you?" Clara asked, her voice cutting cleanly through the quiet space. "You're making a terrible mistake."

Julian swallowed hard, taking a half-step back. "Clara, please. Not here. Not in front of everyone."

"Why not?" Clara countered, her tone sharp and unyielding. "Are you afraid the truth will ruin your perfect little picture?"

Helen, Julian’s mother, sat in the front row, her face draining of color. She gripped her dark green high-neck top with trembling fingers. Beside her, Chloe, Julian’s younger sister in her gold silk dress, gasped softly, clutching her pearls in sheer disbelief.

Clara’s hands moved deliberately to the small of her back. Her fingers grasped the metallic pull of the zipper on her gown. With a steady, agonizing motion, she pulled it down. The harsh tearing sound of teeth separating echoed through the acoustic hall like a gunshot.

Helen stood up from her seat, her eyes wide with mounting panic. "Please, don't do this here," she pleaded, her voice cracking.

Clara didn't stop her hands. She turned her head slightly toward her future mother-in-law, her eyes flashing with cold fire. "Then tell everyone why you're afraid."

Before Helen could utter another defense, Clara let the back of her dress split open, revealing something pinned to the inner corset that made Julian lunge forward in sheer panic.
