Chapter 9 - The Crimson Reception

The ballroom downstairs was a picture of chaotic elegance. Crystal chandeliers cast a dazzling, warm glow over hundreds of expensive floral arrangements, polished silverware, and rows of empty champagne flutes. But the guests were nowhere to be found. Instead, the grand hall was dead silent, save for the low hum of the estate's security monitors flickering on the wall behind the main bar.
Elena, still wearing her blood-stained wedding gown, hurried down the sweeping marble staircase with Detective Miller and Sarah close behind her. Maya followed nervously, clutching her ruined maid's apron around her waist.
"Where is everyone?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at the empty banquet tables. "They were all seated for the prelude just ten minutes ago."
Elena stopped on the landing, her eyes scanning the room. The double doors leading out to the massive seaside terrace stood wide open, letting in a cold, howling sea breeze that knocked over several tall candle stands. On the central projection screen, instead of the romantic slideshow of her and Julian's engagement photos, a chaotic live security feed was looping on repeat.
It showed the parking lot at the back of the estate. Three black SUVs blocked the exit gates, their hazard lights flashing rhythmically in the gray drizzle. Standing outside the vehicles were several unfamiliar men in dark suits, holding heavy briefcases and speaking urgently into encrypted radios.
"That's not Julian's security team," Detective Miller said, his hand dropping instinctively to the holster of his sidearm. He drew his weapon again, gesturing for Elena and the others to stay behind him. "Those are international operatives. Julian wasn't just running a local scam; he was laundering money for a syndicate."
Elena felt the ground drop out from under her. "My parents... where are my parents?" she gasped, her voice breaking as she ran down the remaining steps toward the terrace doors.
"Elena, wait!" Detective Miller shouted, but she ignored him, sprinting across the polished hardwood floor and bursting out onto the stone terrace.
The cold rain hit her face like a slap. The sprawling lawn below was empty, except for a single, crumpled envelope lying in the middle of the wet grass. Elena ran to the stone balustrade and looked down. Tied to the base of the terrace pillar was a small, glowing laptop, its screen displaying a live video feed of her father and mother tied to chairs in the estate's underground wine cellar.

And sitting beside them, staring directly up into the camera lens with a terrifying, silent smirk, was a man Elena had never seen before in her life.
