Chapter 6 - The Locked Door

The brass handle of the bridal suite door began to turn, slowly and deliberately, cutting off whatever response Elena was about to give. Sarah gasped, backing away until she hit the edge of the wardrobe, her hands flying to her mouth. Maya froze, her eyes darting frantically around the room as if searching for a place to hide.

"There's nowhere to go!" Maya whispered in a panic, her voice trembling. "The balcony drops fifty feet into the rocks below!"

"Get in the walk-in closet," Elena commanded in a sharp, authoritative tone that brooked no argument. Her panic vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened resolve. She grabbed Maya by the shoulders and pushed her toward the mirrored dressing room door. "Quietly. Do not make a sound."

Maya scrambled inside, pulling the heavy mirrored door shut just as the bedroom door clicked open.

Julian stepped into the room, his expression unreadable. He had discarded his jacket, and his white dress shirt was slightly unbuttoned at the collar, giving him an unsettling, unkempt appearance that contrasted sharply with his usual immaculate presentation. He scanned the room, his eyes lingering on the open balcony doors and the swaying curtains before fixing his gaze entirely on Elena.

"You're taking an awfully long time with that letter, love," Julian said, his voice smooth, carrying a subtle edge of warning as he closed the door behind him and locked it with a sharp turn of the deadbolt.

Elena stood by the vanity, her hands resting calmly on the polished wood, shielding the bouquet of roses and the hidden fragments of the ledger. She forced her breathing to remain slow and steady, matching his rhythm.

"It's a very long letter, Julian," Elena replied evenly, her dark eyes meeting his without flinching. "It covers a lot of ground. From old friends to old... accidents."

Julian’s footsteps stopped midway across the room. A micro-expression of surprise flickered across his face, gone in a fraction of a second, replaced by a thin, dangerous smile. He slid his hands into his trouser pockets, walking slowly toward her, his movements predatory and deliberate.

"People love to talk about the past when they're jealous of the present," Julian said smoothly, stopping just a few feet away from her. The scent of his expensive cologne—sandalwood and amber—suddenly smelled sickeningly sweet, like decay wrapped in silk. "Don't let ghosts ruin what we're building, Elena. We have a future to think about."

"A future," Elena repeated, letting out a cold, humorless laugh. She lifted her chin, staring directly into his eyes. "Tell me, Julian, does that future include the insurance payout from Clara’s fire? Or is that already spent?"

Julian’s smile vanished instantly. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees as the mask slipped completely, revealing the cold, calculating monster underneath.
