Chapter 12 - The Betrayal in the Study The words burned into the paper like acid. “Maya was never on your side.”

Elena stared at the ink, the world around her tilting violently. The heavy mahogany study seemed to spin on its axis. Every warning Maya had given her, every tear shed on the balcony, every engineered moment of panic and rescue—it was all an elaborate, meticulously rehearsed performance designed to push Elena into opening the safe herself.

A soft, mocking clap echoed from the doorway behind her.

Elena spun around, clutching the hardware wallet and the confession letter to her chest. Standing in the open doorway of the study was Maya. But the terrified, disheveled maid was gone. In her place stood a woman with a cool, calculating smirk, her posture rigid and confident, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at Elena’s heart.

"You really are as sharp as Julian said you were," Maya said, her voice entirely devoid of the trembling vulnerability she had displayed earlier. She stepped into the room, kicking the heavy oak door shut behind her with a soft click.

Elena’s voice shook with furious disbelief. "You... you were working with him the entire time. The fire, the accounts, the threats—it was all a setup."

"Not a setup, Elena. A transition," Maya corrected smoothly, walking closer while keeping the gun perfectly steady. "Julian got greedy. He wanted to keep all the assets for himself and cut the syndicate out of the arrangement. So, we needed a patsy. Someone with enough clean money to absorb the losses, and someone stupid enough to hand over the decryption keys willingly."

"And my parents?" Elena whispered, tears of rage burning her eyes. "Are they even in the cellar?"

Maya smiled, a chilling, vacant expression. "Oh, your parents are right where I said they were. Though they won't be breathing much longer if you don't hand over that hardware wallet right now."

Elena tightened her grip on the small metal device in her hand. Her mind raced, calculating every angle, every escape route, every possible consequence. She looked down at the gun barrel aimed at her chest, then back up at Maya’s cold, unblinking eyes.

"You won't get away with this," Elena said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, steady register. "Detective Miller is downstairs. He heard the shots. He knows I'm up here."

Maya laughed, a short, sharp sound. "Detective Miller is currently having a very difficult conversation with three of my associates in the foyer. By the time he clears the ground floor, you and I will be miles away on a yacht heading international waters."

Before Maya could take another step forward, the study window behind Elena suddenly shattered inward in an explosion of glass and rain.
