Chapter 10 - The Ultimatum in the Cellar

The rain hammered relentlessly against the stone balustrade, soaking the delicate lace of Elena’s wedding gown and plastering her dark curls to her forehead. She gripped the cold stone ledge with white-knuckled intensity, staring down at the glowing laptop screen strapped to the pillar.
On the display, her father and mother sat bound to wooden chairs in the dim, amber-lit wine cellar, their mouths taped shut, terror carved into their aging faces. Standing directly behind them was a tall, imposing man in a tailored charcoal overcoat, his face half-shadowed by the dim lighting. He picked up a small handheld microphone, and a harsh, metallic audio feed crackled to life through the laptop's built-in speakers.
"Good afternoon, Elena," the man’s voice echoed across the terrace, deep and devoid of any human warmth. "I apologize for crashing the wedding, but your soon-to-be-husband had a rather significant debt to settle with us before he was so rudely interrupted by the local constabulary."
Detective Miller rushed out onto the terrace, his gun raised, scanning the cliffside and the surrounding gardens. "Who is that? Identify yourself!" the detective shouted into the wind.
The man on the screen chuckled softly, a grating, lifeless sound. "Detective Miller, I presume? You're a bit out of your depth here, officer. This isn't a local domestic dispute. Julian Vance was just our middleman. And now that he's in handcuffs, you are going to finish the transaction for him."
Elena stepped closer to the laptop, her voice shaking with a potent mix of grief and unbridled fury. "What do you want? My parents have nothing to do with this!"
"Your parents are collateral, my dear," the man replied smoothly. "In the wall safe behind the study painting upstairs, there is a physical hardware wallet containing the decryption keys to our offshore accounts. Bring it to the edge of the eastern cliff within ten minutes, alone, or the wine cellar gets a new drainage system."
The video feed abruptly cut to black.
Sarah rushed out onto the terrace, grabbing Elena’s arm in a panic. "You can't go down there! It's a trap! If you give them the keys, they'll kill your parents anyway and throw you off the cliff!"
Elena looked at Sarah, then down at Detective Miller, who was furiously speaking into his radio, calling for backup units that were still miles away on the winding coastal roads.
"If I don't go, they die right now," Elena said, her voice terrifyingly calm. She pulled her arm free, turned away from the terrace, and began running back toward the grand hall.
"Where are you going?!" Detective Miller yelled, chasing after her.

"To get the keys," Elena called back over her shoulder. "And then I'm going to finish this."
