Chapter 3 - The Groom at the Threshold

Julian’s voice drifted through the thick wood of the door, warm, resonant, and dripping with an easy charm that had once made Elena feel invincible. Standing by the window, Elena felt the blood rush in her ears, a roaring tide that drowned out the sound of the crashing waves below. She looked down at the handwritten letter in her hand, the ink blurring slightly behind a fresh sheen of tears.
Sarah panicked, lunging forward to grab Elena’s arm. "Don't answer it. Tell him you're not feeling well. Tell him... I don't know, tell him anything!"
"I have to open it," Elena whispered, shaking her head. She pulled her arm free and took a slow, measured step toward the heavy door, her white satin gown trailing softly behind her.
"Elena, open up!" Julian called again, his tone shifting just a fraction, losing a bit of its playful cadence and revealing a hard, impatient edge that Elena had never noticed before. "The photographer is complaining about the clouds. Let’s get this show on the road. We have a reception to host."
Elena reached out, her fingers wrapping around the brass handle. She pulled the door open a crack. Julian stood in the hallway, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, a boutonnière of white roses pinned to his lapel. His dark hair was neatly styled, and a gentle smile curved his lips. But it was his eyes that stopped Elena cold—they were completely devoid of warmth, calculating and sharp, like a predator assessing a trapped animal.
"There she is," Julian murmured, stepping closer, though he didn't cross the threshold. He reached out to brush a stray curl from her face, his thumb grazing her cheek with practiced tenderness. "You look breathtaking, love. Are you ready to make this official?"
Elena forced her facial muscles to relax, hiding the turbulent storm raging inside her chest. She leaned into his touch just enough to maintain the illusion, keeping her left hand hidden behind the folds of her dress, clutching the incriminating letter.
"I'm ready, Julian," Elena replied, her voice steady and smooth, belying the sheer terror gripping her heart. "Just... give me one more minute to finish reading something important."
Julian’s smile tightened slightly, his eyes dropping to her hands before flashing back to her face with a flicker of suspicion. "A letter? From whom? We agreed no gifts until after the ceremony."
"Just an old friend," Elena lied softly, maintaining unbroken eye contact with the man she was supposed to marry in less than an hour. "Someone wishing us well from far away."

Julian’s jaw clenched imperceptibly, a micro-expression that confirmed every dark suspicion written on the paper in her hand. He lowered his voice, stepping right up to the doorway. "Let's make sure we don't keep our guests waiting, Elena. Some promises are harder to break than others."
