Chapter 13 - The Descent

A dark figure vaulted through the shattered window frame, landing heavily on the Persian rug with a roll that sent broken glass flying across the room. Before Maya could pivot her gun toward the new threat, a heavy brass sculpture swept out from the floor, catching her weapon-wielding wrist with bone-crunching force.

The silenced pistol flew from Maya’s hand, skidding across the polished wood and crashing into the bookshelf. Maya shrieked in pain, stumbling backward against the desk.

Elena stood frozen, her eyes widening in shock as the figure rose to their feet, wiping the rain from their face. It wasn't Detective Miller. It was Sarah.

"Sarah?!" Elena gasped, dropping the hardware wallet in sheer disbelief. "What are you doing? How did you get up here from the balcony?"

Sarah didn't answer immediately. She shook out her hand, wincing from the impact, and stepped between Elena and Maya. Her bridesmaid dress was torn, her hair soaked, and her eyes burned with an intensity Elena had never seen in her best friend before.

"I told you I wasn't going to let you walk into a slaughterhouse alone," Sarah said, breathing heavily. She turned her gaze to Maya, who was clutching her broken wrist, glaring daggers at them both. "And I certainly wasn't going to let this little theater major ruin our graduation plan."

Maya hissed through clenched teeth, her face twisted in rage. "You stupid bint. You have no idea what you've just interfered with. The syndicate won't stop until every single one of you is at the bottom of the ocean!"

"The syndicate can wait in line behind the state police," a deep voice boomed from the doorway.

Detective Miller stepped into the study, flanked by four heavily armed tactical officers. His clothing was damp, and a small cut bled above his eyebrow, but his gun was locked firmly on Maya.

"Maya Vance, alias Maria Santos," Detective Miller read smoothly off a digital tablet in his hand as he walked forward. "You're under arrest for international money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and extortion. I believe that makes it a clean sweep for the family business."

Maya went completely rigid, all the color draining from her face as the tactical officers moved in, slapping heavy steel cuffs onto her wrists and dragging her toward the door. She didn't fight back; she simply stared at Elena with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred until the heavy oak door closed behind her.

The study fell silent once more, save for the sound of the rain lashing against the broken window frame.

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, her knees finally giving out. She sank slowly to the floor amidst the shattered glass and ruined rose petals, burying her face in her hands as the full weight of the nightmare finally crashed down upon her.
