Chapter 9 - The Demand Note

The silence in the modern apartment kitchen was deafening. Maya dropped back onto the sofa cushion, the color entirely draining from her face as the full, devastating reality of Eleanor’s tactical chess move finally set in.
"A demand note," Maya repeated numbly, her voice barely a whisper. "That means... that means she can legally demand full repayment of two point five million dollars immediately. Within thirty days."
"Within fourteen business days," Julian corrected her quietly, pointing a finger at a small, fine-print clause at the very bottom of the ledger page. "If the balance isn't paid in full, Vance Holdings initiates corporate asset seizure against all primary and secondary guarantors."
"We don't have two million dollars!" Maya screamed, finally losing whatever fragile composure she had managed to maintain over the last hour. She grabbed a decorative throw pillow and hurled it across the room, smashing it hard against the kitchen counter. "We don't even have two thousand dollars! She is literally trying to bankrupt us and put us in prison!"
"She's not trying to put us in prison, Maya," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm compared to her explosive panic. "She's forcing us to surrender. She wants us to admit that we made a massive mistake, call off the wedding, and apologize for treating her like an unwanted burden."
"And are you going to do it?" Maya demanded, her dark eyes flashing with a wild, desperate fury as she grabbed the lapels of his shirt and shook him. "Are you going to crawl back to your mother like a beaten dog and beg for her forgiveness just to save your precious inheritance?"
Julian looked down at his fiancée, seeing not the glamorous, confident woman he had fallen in love with in Paris two years ago, but a stranger driven entirely by panic and greed. He gently unpeeled her fingers from his shirt, standing up slowly from the sofa.
"I'm going to call her," Julian said, walking toward the marble counter where the smartphone lay resting in silence.
"If you apologize to her, our relationship is over," Maya whispered, her voice dropping into a cold, menacing ultimatum. "If you let her win this war and humiliate me like this, I will pack my bags tonight and you will never see me again."
Julian picked up the phone. He looked at Maya, taking in the silk robe, the expensive pearls, and the absolute desperation shining in her eyes. For the first time in his life, the glamour of his wealthy lifestyle peeled away, revealing the hollow, transactional foundation upon which his entire adult existence had been built.

He unlocked the screen, tapped his mother’s direct contact number, and pressed call, letting the phone ring out into the quiet night air while Maya watched him with bated breath.
