Chapter 14 - The North Country Deed

Julian stared at the manila folder resting on the marble counter, his chest tightening with a confusing mix of pride, exhaustion, and lingering resentment. He didn't reach out to touch it.
"I thought I was officially disowned from the Vance family trust," Julian said, his voice hard and steady as he looked at his mother’s back. "I thought my name was being scrubbed from the registry by sunrise."
Eleanor turned slowly away from the glittering city skyline, her silver-grey hair catching the amber glow of the apartment's overhead lights. Her expression was softer now, the cold armor of the corporate titan finally slipping away to reveal the weary mother underneath.
"You were disowned from the corporate empire, Julian," Eleanor said quietly, taking a slow step toward him. "Vance Holdings is a cold, calculated machine that requires a very specific kind of ruthlessness to survive. A machine I built to ensure our family name would never again be vulnerable to poverty or betrayal. But that machine is not a family."
Julian crossed his arms over his chest, his jaw still tight. "You spent two weeks destroying my wedding and sending me fake demand notes just to teach me a lesson?"
"It wasn't a fake demand note," Eleanor corrected him gently, a faint, weary smile touching the corners of her mouth. "The debt was real, and the legal machinery was fully operational. If you had chosen to sue me alongside that girl, the courts would have stripped you of everything by dawn. But you didn't. At the very last second, you chose your own path, even when you thought it meant walking away with nothing."
Julian looked down at the manila folder on the counter, the full weight of the night's events finally crashing down over his shoulders. He realized that his mother hadn't been trying to destroy him; she had been trying to burn away everything false in his life until only the genuine core of who he was remained.
"Why the house up north?" Julian asked softly.
"Because that's where I lived with your father before we built the corporate empire," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a tender, nostalgic register he hadn't heard in over twenty years. "Before the money, before the board meetings, before the expectations. It's a quiet place where a man can learn how to build a real life with his own two hands, without a corporate safety net or a silver spoon."
Julian walked slowly over to the counter, his fingers brushing against the heavy manila folder. He opened the cover just an inch, catching a glimpse of the official property deed bearing his own name, unencumbered by any corporate debt or family strings.

Before he could speak, his phone buzzed violently on the marble counter with an incoming text notification from an unknown number. He glanced down at the screen, and his blood instantly ran cold.
