Chapter 11 - Stripped Bare

Maya stepped back as if she had been physically struck, her hands dropping limply to her sides. "What are you talking about? What do you mean without luxury items?"

"I mean exactly what I said," Julian replied, walking steadily toward the bedroom closet. "If we are going to build a life together based on genuine love rather than financial leverage, then we start from absolute zero. Right here, tonight."

He reached into the custom wooden closet and began systematically pulling his designer suits off their velvet hangers, tossing them into a black garbage bag. Maya stood in the doorway, watching him in absolute horror as the reality of his words began to sink into her brain.

"Have you completely lost your mind?" Maya shrieked, rushing forward to grab his arm. "You're throwing away thousands of dollars in clothing! What are we supposed to wear tomorrow—rags?!"

"We wear whatever we already own that wasn't bought with my mother's credit cards," Julian said calmly, tying off the top of the garbage bag with a sharp twist of his wrist. "And as for your designer dresses, your luxury handbags, and those pearls around your neck... we leave them all behind in this apartment."

"I am not leaving my pearls!" Maya screamed, her voice cracking with pure panic as she instinctively covered the expensive necklace with both hands. "Your mother gave me these! They were a gift!"

"They were an investment in compliance, Maya," Julian corrected her gently, his eyes filled with a sad, steady clarity. "Just like everything else in this apartment. If we take them with us, we are just playing my mother's game by different rules. I'm done playing."

Maya stared at him for a long, agonizing moment, her chest heaving as she tried to calculate every possible angle of escape. She realized with a sickening jolt of absolute terror that Julian wasn't bluffing. The man standing before her wasn't the spoiled, compliant corporate heir she had manipulated into funding her extravagant lifestyle for the past two years. He was a man who had finally hit rock bottom and found a strange, unbreakable peace at the very center of his own ruin.

"I can't do this," Maya whispered, stepping back until her spine hit the bedroom wall. "I didn't sign up for poverty, Julian. I love you, but I am not going to live in a studio apartment eating instant ramen just to prove some stupid moral point to your mother."

Julian paused, holding the black garbage bag in his hand as he looked at the woman he was scheduled to marry in less than fourteen hours. The silence in the room stretched out like an uncrossable chasm, heavy with the undeniable truth of who they both really were.

"Then don't marry me tomorrow," Julian said quietly.

Before Maya could formulate a response, a loud, heavy knocking echoed from the apartment's front hallway door, followed immediately by the sound of a key turning smoothly in the brass deadbolt lock.
